SIYAKHANA

Siyakhana, translated from Zulu means "building one another". With help from volunteers and workers on site, the previously barren hectare of land in the center of Johannesburg has been converted into an oasis. It is also home to two Zerho Toilets.

In 2011, a solar water-heating system was built almost entirely out of 2-litre plastic bottles. Siyakhana also installed two Zerho Waterless Toilets to give site workers and visitors access.

People who visit are taught sustainable gardening practices, health and nutrition. Fresh vegetables can also be bought on the premises. It had completely transformed from the dumpsite it was, into the flourishing garden it is today.
